Recent research shows that gut health plays a vital role in overall well-being, impacting not only digestion but also immune function, mental health, and chronic disease prevention. The gut microbiome, a complex community of trillions of bacteria, helps regulate inflammation, produce essential nutrients, and maintain a healthy gut barrier.
The Allen County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and Registered Dietitian, Jennifer Turner, taught a sourdough Workshop. The workshop was to promote gut health by teaching participants how to make naturally fermented bread. Through hands-on learning, individuals discovered how to make sourdough bread.. By understanding the science behind fermentation and the role of gut-friendly foods, participants are empowered to make healthier choices that support digestion and overall wellness.
From the data collected after the workshop, 18 participants learned how to create a sourdough starter and baked a loaf of bread. Additionally, these individuals now grasp the process of maintaining a healthy gut. A three-month follow-up evaluation from participants showed that 15 people are continuing to make sourdough bread from the workshop.
