Pike County has always prided itself on our participation at the State Fair. For many years, we have participated in the Avian Bowl and Poultry Judging competitions. We have even competed on the national level many times. Over the past several years, participation in these events have declined. Pike County has either not participated or performed very poorly at the State Fair in theses competitions for several years in a row. We look to remedy this by creating a Poultry Club for youth that are interested in the topic and wish to compete at the State Fair.
We designed the club to focus on Avian Bowl and Poultry Judging content to prepare for the State Fair competition. A previous State Fair winner is leading the club and creating study materials using resources from 4-H curriculum. We are also attending poultry judging trainings with Dr. Jacob to properly prepare.
The target audience for this club is youth ages 9-18. Currently we have ages 9-13 attending and we look forward to growing with this group of children as the years go on. The club currently has 4 female members and 2 male members. We also have several that come from a home schooling background and many from a public school background. Past experiences also vary in this club. 3 of the members have said that they own chickens and are very familiar with the topic, while the other members have no former experience.
We have currently only held 1 meeting with another one coming up in a few weeks. We aim to meet monthly and then progress to weekly as we approach the State Fair. One member's mother commented that they have recently moved from Michigan, where they owned a small farm, to Pike county, where they have basically no access to farm animals at all. She said that even after one meeting, she could see a spark in her child's eyes from being able to talk about what he loves and misses from his home.
