Success StoryThe Calm Craft Series

The Calm Craft Series

Author: Megan Gullett

Planning Unit: Russell County CES

Major Program: Mental Health and Well-being - FCS

Plan of Work: Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Many adults in Russell County are seeking meaningful ways to manage stress, connect with others, and develop new skills. Fiber arts such as crocheting provide not only a creative outlet, but also promote mindfulness, social interaction, and a sense of purpose. However, most local residents interested in crochet lacked any prior experience with the craft.

Russell County Extension offered three beginner crochet classes starting in August to teach foundational crochet skills. These classes also emphasized creativity and connection as tools for supporting mental wellness. Following the initial series, a group of 5–7 committed participants requested to continue meeting weekly to further build their skills. The group receives ongoing support from Russell County Extension and has formed connections with the Russell County Extension Homemakers, a nonprofit that promotes education, socialization, and community service.

Out of the 40 individuals who attended beginner classes, 5–7 continued as part of an intermediate-level crochet group. None had crocheted before joining. All participants are now independently working on projects, with many creating handmade gifts and home items. The group meets weekly and has become a meaningful source of skill development, friendship, and emotional support. Members are primarily adults seeking both personal enrichment and a social outlet.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact:
The continuing crochet group has led to multiple positive outcomes:

Skill Development: All members have completed at least one solo project and are working on more advanced patterns.

Community Engagement:

  • 3 of 7 participants joined the Russell County Extension Homemakers.

  • 1 entered crochet work into the Cultural Arts program.

  • 3 plan to enter items into the upcoming county fair.

  • Mental Well-being: 2 participants shared that the group has been a vital support system during post-surgery recovery. One member shared, “I can’t do much right now because I can’t move my neck, but I can still crochet. This group gives me something to look forward to every week.” Another participant said, “Crocheting has kept my hands busy and my mind calm. It’s helped me more than I ever expected.”

Weekly meetings have become a safe, consistent space for participants to build confidence, reduce stress, and enjoy a creative routine with others. This program demonstrates how a simple hands-on skill can have a profound impact on personal growth, mental health, and community involvement.
