Gardening Safely

Describe the Issue or Situation.

Gardening is a popular hobby; while there are many health benefits, there are risks.  More than 400,000 people end up in the emergency room due to garden tool-related injuries according to the Consumer Safety Commission.


Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable). Oldham County Extension Family Consumer Science Agent partnered with Yew Dell Botanical Gardens to teach their members and community members a Gardening Safely Course.


Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.  8 Adults in Oldham and surrounding counties


Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.

100 % of participants said they would use knowledge or skills learned from this program to garden safely.

Participants mentioned the following as the most significant things learned from program:

3 participants mentioned stretching prior to gardening

1 participant found the videos on lifting properly and rotating between tasks properly particularly helpful

 3 participants found using ergonomical and the correct tools stood out to them.

Two participants noted that skin safety, insect repellant and using gloves stood out.
