Success StoryFleming County Extension Heart Health Wellness Event

Fleming County Extension Heart Health Wellness Event

Author: Kaitlyn Fryman

Planning Unit: Fleming County CES

Major Program: Health & Wellbeing

Plan of Work: Nutrition/Health/Wellness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Describe the Issue or Situation:
Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in Kentucky, with rural communities facing significant challenges related to hypertension, poor dietary habits, and limited access to preventative care. Fleming County Extension recognized the need for increased community education and outreach around heart health, especially during American Heart Month.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable):
The Fleming County Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension Office hosted a Heart Health Wellness Event to provide practical education and health screenings to the community. UK Extension Specialist Dr. Cheryl Witt led an informative session on heart health. A local participant shared her personal journey with heart disease and described her involvement in a current heart health study with the University of Kentucky. FCS Agent Katie Fryman demonstrated a heart-healthy recipe, Buffalo Cauliflower Bites, from the Plan Eat Move curriculum, encouraging healthy eating habits. Attendees also created their own sodium-free seasoning blend as a hands-on takeaway. Local partners, including the Fleming County Health Department and Kynect, were present to provide blood pressure checks, share helpful information about local health resources, and offer giveaways for participants.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience:
A total of 25 participants attended - our largest turnout to date for this event. Attendees included adults of various ages from across Fleming County, many of whom are at risk for or living with heart-related conditions.

Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact:
Post-event evaluations indicated that 100% of participants gained new knowledge about heart health, and 92% reported they planned to make at least one lifestyle change based on what they learned. Participants noted they felt more confident making low-sodium snacks and were interested in incorporating heart-healthy recipes into their weekly meals. Additionally, several attendees expressed appreciation for the blood pressure checks and health information provided by community partners, stating it made them more aware of their personal health status and the local resources available to support them.
