Beginning Bee Keeping

Author: Gary Hamilton

Planning Unit: Montgomery County CES

Major Program: Pollinators

Plan of Work: Production and Economic Challenges Facing Crop Producers

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Central Kentucky has seen rising interest in beekeeping among the landowner population.   Fortunately, the region has a rich history of beekeeping with a wealth of knowledge and expertise among members of the community.  The Powell, Montgomery, and Clark County Extension offices partnered to present the Beginner Beekeeping School which was hosted for the first time in Montgomery County.   The program’s target audience were new or just started their beekeeping journey.  In addition to a crash course in beekeeping, the class sought to connect these new beekeepers to the beekeeping associations in the area to encourage continued education and fellowship.

Larry Young, 2021 State Beekeeper of the Year, presented the educational material.  The class was a four-part series with 50 attendees per session.   A Qualtrics survey indicated that 100% of the students not only increased their knowledge on beekeeping but will also implement those practices into their management.  In addition, five of the attendees have joined the Powell/Clark Beekeeper’s Association.
