Planning Unit: Greenup County CES
Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - CED
Plan of Work: Promoting Leadership and Community Development
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The city of Greenup is also the county seat. There has been a resurgence of business owners with a desire to band together to promote Greenup's downtown and surrounding areas through economic development training and partnerships for community events that support local businesses. Greenup Extension has been called upon to assist by providing direction and training through the organization phase of re-starting the association that has been dormant since pre-pandemic. Regular monthly meetings have been established with an educational focus. Officers have been elected, and bylaw establishment is being discussed. Because the City of Greenup Business Association (GBA) is a revival of the Greenup Merchant's Association, care is being placed on being respectful to past history while moving forward with the needs of today.
The Greenup Library has joined the GBA and has offered meeting space and refreshments. Membership in the first year totaled 22 with a goal to reach 30 by the end of the year.
The officers are researching current city businesses, annexed areas, and home-based business owners who may be interested in being part of the group.
Initial outcomes have been providing free trainings, brought to GBA from the Women's Business Center of Central Appalachia. This connection was made through the educational outreach coordinator who lives in Kentucky, works in Ohio, and has worked with Greenup Extension in the past. This partner works with women and men - their services are available to anyone. GBA membership has already benefitted by trainings on the topics of marketing, photography skills for social media, small business loans, and business plans. The current goal is to complete the process of writing a mission and vision statement - led by Extension.
