Describe the Issue or Situation.  Each year, Family and Consumer Science (FCS) Agents from eight counties in western Kentucky come together to host a regional seminar designed to bring informal, research-based education to our communities. This year’s theme, Spring Into Green – Sustainable Living, focused on environmental stewardship and practical ways individuals can reduce their ecological footprint at home.

Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).

The event featured three dynamic and informative sessions:

  • Upcycling and Eco-Friendly Projects for the Home

  • Composting for Home Use

  • Rain Barrels and Stormwater Runoff Pollution

A total of 68 participants attended the seminar, with 59 completing evaluations following the program. The feedback clearly demonstrated the impact of the day’s learning experiences.

  • 75% of respondents reported an increase in their knowledge, opinions, or skills related to composting.

  • 60% indicated plans to utilize rainwater for useful purposes around the home.

  • 73% gained a better understanding of how stormwater pollution occurs.

  • 44% are now considering composting at home.

  • 71% plan to repurpose or recycle items instead of throwing them away.

  • 53% will begin to reuse rainwater for various purposes.

Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.  68 participants with 59 completing the evaluation.  Our target audience was the citizens of Western Kentucky in the Purchase Area.

Participants praised the expertise of the presenters and the relevance of the topics. Many also offered suggestions for future seminar topics, showing continued engagement and interest in sustainable living practices.

This annual seminar exemplifies the commitment of western Kentucky’s FCS Agents to provide timely, meaningful, and expert-led education that empowers our communities to live healthier, more sustainable lives.
