The Kentucky 4-H Communication Program aims to empower youth to express their thoughts and opinions, use information they’ve learned to communicate with others, and be able to demonstrate a skill they have learned. In 2023, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension System's community needs assessment identified youth life skill training and workforce readiness as top priorities. A study by Torres, Sampaio, and Caracas (2023) highlighted that communication training enhances clarity of expression, speech, and feedback skills, essential for other soft skills like negotiation, teamwork, and problem-solving.
On July 13, 2024, 103 4-Hers participated in Demonstrations, 57 in Speech, and 13 in Mock Interview categories at the State 4-H Communication Contest in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Each of the twelve Extension area groupings were able to select one 4-H member to represent their area in each of the nine speech categories, and one junior level 4-H member and one senior level 4-H member in each of the twelve demonstration categories. An online evaluation for the 2024 contest revealed that:
- 45 out of 48 adults felt their child can communicate ideas more effectively due to the program.
- 44 felt their child has improved writing and presentation skills.
- 45 noted their child has applied these skills in other life areas.
Many adults reported significant gains in their children's confidence, especially in public speaking.
Of the 23 4-H participants who completed the evaluation:
- All used writing and presentation skills learned in 4-H.
- All could identify parts of a speech or demonstration.
- 13 are considering a career in communication.
The lower participation in the evaluation may be attributed to a lack of awareness about the evaluation and insufficient initiative to complete it. The Communication Program Committee plans to address this for future contests.
The Kentucky 4-H Communication Program fosters communication skills, job readiness, social interactions, perseverance, resilience, and responsibility, while building friendships and offering personal growth opportunities. Overall, it helps 4-H members become more confident, well-rounded, and prepared for future success.
