Beginning Farmer Series Impact Statement

Issue or Situation

Many beginning farmers face challenges in developing a business plan, understanding funding opportunities, and designing an efficient farm layout. To address these challenges, the Harrison County Extension Office developed an educational series to provide essential knowledge and resources to support new and aspiring farmers.

Outreach or Educational Program Response

The Beginning Farmer Series was held at the Harrison County Extension Office over three months (January – March 2025), offering one class per month. The series covered key topics to support farm business success:

  • Class 1: Business Planning and Record Keeping – Presented by representatives from the Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development (KCARD).
  • Class 2: Local Funding Opportunities – Featured speakers from Extension, the Farm Service Agency (FSA), the Soil Conservation District, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
  • Class 3: Farm Design and Layout – Led by Dr. Steve Higgins, who provided insights into farm infrastructure and feeding system designs.

Number and Description of Participants/Target Audience

The program targeted new and aspiring farmers in Harrison County and surrounding areas. Participants included individuals looking to establish farm businesses, those seeking financial assistance, and farmers wanting to improve their infrastructure and production practices. Class attendance ranged from 18 – 31 participants.

Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact

Survey results indicated a significant increase in participants' knowledge across all three sessions:

  • Business Planning & Record Keeping: 100% of participants reported an increased understanding of business planning, record-keeping essentials, and financial tracking systems. 35% already had a business plan in place, while 65% planned to develop one after attending the session.
  • Funding Opportunities: 100% of participants reported an increased understanding of financial programs available through Extension, FSA, Soil Conservation, and NRCS. 73% planned to apply for at least one funding opportunity.
  • Farm Design & Layout: 100% of participants reported increased knowledge of farm infrastructure, feeder designs, and hay feeding strategies. 80% planned to implement a production practice learned during the session within the next year.

Participants overwhelmingly found the information timely, practical, and educational. All attendees agreed or strongly agreed that the sessions were valuable, and they would recommend the program to others. The success of the Beginning Farmer Series demonstrates the ongoing need for targeted educational programs to support the next generation of farmers.
