Success StoryEnhancing Beef Production

Enhancing Beef Production

Author: Patrick Hardesty

Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Management and Marketing

Outcome: Initial Outcome

With approximately 12,000 beef cows, beef cattle income ranks second in the county.  To improve profits and sustainability, beef educational meetings were conducted in cooperation with the Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association.

To promote beef in the county, the Association cooked at the C & S Mission Store customer appreciation, Murakami employee appreciation, Bluegrass Stockyards customer appreciation, Chamber of Commerce luncheon, American Dairy Association District Meeting, NAPA customer appreciation, and Taylor County FFA Feeding America.

The Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association hosted a Cattlemen’s Roundup with approximately 134 producers participating in the event. Participants viewed new products from six vendors and educational sessions on preparing animals for market, desirable market animal characteristics and a demonstration of proper veterinary techniques.

The Taylor County Cattlemen’s Association also administers the CAIP program.  Fifty-seven producers have been approved for funding in 11 investment areas for a total of $$175,000 and the YAIP program with 11 youths being approved for funding for a total of $15,000.  They also presented two high school seniors with a $750 scholarship and made donations to the Taylor County Fair Beef Show and both local FFA chapters for beef awards.  They also collected $1,345 from local beef producers for North Carolina flood relief and added $1,000 from the association to this effort.

A local beef producer is currently serving on the state board of the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association.
