5th Grade Public Speaking

Communication skills are more important than ever as we live in such a fast-paced environment. Elementary educators in Green County reported that students have not yet focused on any public speaking efforts and also lack interpersonal communication skills and many need confidence building opportunities. To address this need, Green County 4-H incorporated a public speaking opportunity with a writing piece that had already been assigned to all 5th grade students as part of their testing efforts.
Through collaboration with teachers in the 5th grade, the Extension Agent provided programming to individual 5th grade classes that related to state standards. Students were engaged in interactive lessons on verbal and non-verbal communication, speech writing, delivery and peer feedback. The programming culminated with an individual classroom speech contest with opportunities to advance to the county, area and state contests.
This program gave students the opportunity to learn by doing and to increase their public speaking skills in a safe and supportive environment.
In all, 122 students participated in this 4-H communications program in the classroom during the Spring of 2025, meaning all GCIS 5th grade students were impacted. Students that were absent during the contest, were able to have a makeup day and were also judged using state scoring standards. Ninety-seven percent of the students reported this was the first time they had ever presented a speech. Ninety percent of students reported a gain in their public speaking skills and seventy percent shared that they felt an increase in confidence of their abilities. Students also showed respectful peer-to-peer interactions and encouraged classmates that were struggling with being in front of the classroom. One student had extreme anxiety and overcame his fear with the encouragement of his classmates, teacher and 4-H agent, he showed great pride once he had accomplished the task. One student had a speech impediment and according to the teacher he does not normally speak out in front of class, he also exhibited pride and in increased confidence after completing his first ever public speaking experience.
The overall winner from all of the classroom contest went on to compete in the area 4-H Communications contest. This was her first 4-H experience. Both the student and her parents reported that it was a positive experience and they were looking forward to learning more about 4-H opportunities for the future.
The 4-H communications program is more than just public speaking, it is a tool that is helping students develop lifelong skills. Through fostering confidence, critical thinking, clarity, boosting self-esteem, presentation techniques and academic achievement all while in a safe and supportive environment, Green County students are being shaped into tomorrow's leaders.
