Animal Science

Author: Sue Ann McCandless

Planning Unit: Green County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In Hardin County 4th and 5th grade classrooms, more than 360 students were exposed to agriculture and animal science curriculum through cow eyeball dissection. Students had previously studied the human eye in their regular coursework in science and the cow eye is very similar to the human eye allowing them to get an extensive look at the parts of the eye and the specific functions of each structure.

The 4-H agent and teachers worked collaboratively to make sure all students were able to complete the project. Other teachers, school staff and RSO officers also joined in this unique experience. The 4-H agent also shared this program with County Extension Council members so they could get a first hand look at programs that extension staff are sharing in the community.

One student described the activity as "the best thing ever." The student went on to say that he now had the desire to look into future career paths dealing with medicine or animal science. This student and others inquired about future similar activities and expressed deep interest in wanting to continue learning through dissection activities.
