Planning Unit: Hardin County CES
Major Program: Chemical Management
Plan of Work: Agricultural Integrated Pest Management
Outcome: Initial Outcome
In Hardin County, safe pesticide use is a priority for farmers who rely on them for crop protection but face risks to health, the environment, and compliance with regulations. To address this, Private Pesticide Applicator Trainings were held that covered laws, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), safe handling, application techniques, and environmental protection. Key partners included industry experts and University researchers that contributed up-to-date research and training resources. The training was delivered through in-person workshops training sessions. Participants included a mix of small- and large-scale farmers, young and beginning farmers, multi-generational farm families and farm workers seeking certification or recertification, with 50 individuals completing the program. Evaluations showed increased knowledge, with majority saying they will implement safer handling practices and improving compliance. Long-term impacts include better environmental stewardship, cost savings for farmers, and improved community safety. Moving forward, the Extension will continue refining the program to meet the evolving needs of the agricultural community.
