The Ohio County Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Agent has made a significant impact on the health and wellness of young children in the community through the monthly LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Preschool/Primary) for Health program. Partnering with the Fordsville Elementary Head Start Program, this initiative reaches 18 eager students each month, delivering engaging lessons that foster a love for reading, encourage physical activity, and promote nutritious eating habits. By integrating health-related themes into fun and interactive sessions, the program equips children with the tools to make healthier choices from an early age.

Each session begins with a story time featuring a book on a health-related topic, such as the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, staying active, or practicing hygiene. The children eagerly listen and engage with the story, learning key messages in an enjoyable way. Following the reading, the FCS Agent leads the students in a lively physical activity that complements the theme of the book. Whether it’s dancing or game, the children develop their motor skills while reinforcing the importance of staying active. The session concludes with a nutritious snack that ties into the lesson, such as fruit kabobs or dinosaur sandwiches, giving the children a hands-on experience in healthy eating.

The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the children and teachers at Fordsville Elementary Head Start. The Fordsville Head Start Teacher stated, “Our preschoolers get so excited when they learn the Ohio County FCS Agent is coming to visit! They can’t wait to see what new snacks she brings each time. They also love using the preschool MyPlate she gave us in our dramatic play center. They love finding the foods to match each component. I am so glad this program is offered and love watching the students learn about healthy nutrition!”
