Major Program: Leadership
Plan of Work: Building life skills among all ages
Outcome: Initial Outcome
I started a leadership program with the 8th-grade students at St. Romuald Catholic School. This program began as a series of three classes focused on evaluating the students' personal values and exploring how technology can either hinder or enhance those values. Throughout the sessions, the students examined their values and considered how modern technologies impact their ability to live out those values. They learned that making choices aligned with their values can contribute to a greater sense of well-being.
The program included 18 eighth graders and utilized the Common Sense Education curriculum, which is part of digital citizenship. This initiative is part of digital well-being collections designed for middle and high school students. At the end of the three lessons, students reflected on their personal values and identified what is most important to them. They considered how various values are supported or compromised by technology and were taught about the connections between values, behaviors, and overall well-being.
As schools increasingly integrate technology into the classroom, many students were unaware of how various technologies and apps influence their personal values, as well as how some apps can have both positive and negative effects. This reflection was one of the initial outcomes of the program.
