Inspiring Young Scientists Through Hands-On STEM Exploration

For six weeks, elementary-aged youth engaged in an exciting series of STEM activities designed to foster curiosity and hands-on learning. Using CLOVER, curriculum from a 4-H Learning Platform, we conducted a series of experiments on a variety of topics. Through engaging experiments, they explored concepts such as electric circuits using fruit, Play-Doh, and lights, the science behind butter-making by separating fat in heavy cream, density through household liquids, chemical reactions by creating volcanic eruptions with baking soda and vinegar, and geology/formation of rocks while making edible dirt cups. These activities provided an interactive approach to learning scientific principles in a fun and accessible way.
In partnership with The Grace Collective, a homeschool group, this initiative expanded opportunities for young learners to explore science beyond traditional classroom settings. A total of 34 students (15 females and 14 males) ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade participated. The program encouraged teamwork and peer mentoring, allowing students of different ages to collaborate and support one another in scientific discovery.
The impact of the program was significant, with students demonstrating enhanced problem-solving skills and increased confidence in conducting science experiments. Evaluation data showed that 82% of participants had never made butter before, making it a brand-new learning experience that connected everyday life to science. Additionally, 58% of students reported feeling more confident performing experiments, and 100% successfully worked in teams to complete the circuit activity. These results highlight how hands-on STEM learning not only strengthens scientific understanding but also fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity. By providing opportunities for exploration and discovery, this program successfully empowered young learners to see themselves as scientists and problem-solvers, preparing them for future academic and career pathways in STEM.
