Youth Shine at the Kentucky 4-H Issues Conference

Author: Leslea Barnes

Planning Unit: Crittenden County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Issue
Crittenden County youth face a need for leadership development and public engagement skills to address local challenges effectively. Many young people in the area lack opportunities to develop critical skills such as public speaking, problem-solving, and collaboration. This gap limits their ability to take active roles in identifying and solving community issues. The Kentucky 4-H Issues Conference is a wonderful opportunity to address these needs by providing youth with the knowledge and confidence to lead change in their communities.

Program/Outreach Response & Partners
The program engaged youth in hands-on learning activities focused on identifying local issues, building presentation skills, and developing action plans to address community challenges. Partners included Kentucky 4-H leadership staff, who facilitated the conference, and local Extension agents, who supported participants through pre- and post-conference mentoring. The conference also brought together youth leaders, guest speakers, and educators to create a dynamic, supportive learning environment.

Target Audience and Reach
The program directly involved two high school students from Crittenden County. The participants included one returning delegate, who served as a youth leader, and one first-time attendee. Their involvement reflected the Extension Service's commitment to engaging diverse youth from the community in leadership development opportunities.

Statement of Outcomes/Impact
Short-term Outcomes: Both participants gained new knowledge and skills in identifying community issues, collaborating with peers, and presenting solutions. The returning delegate enhanced her leadership abilities by guiding her group through discussions and activities, while the first-time attendee increased her confidence in public speaking.
Medium-term Outcomes: Upon returning to Crittenden County, the youth began applying their skills to school projects and community initiatives, demonstrating improved public speaking and teamwork abilities.
Long-term Outcomes: These youth leaders are now equipped to contribute to community improvement efforts, fostering a culture of proactive problem-solving and leadership in their local area. Their experience will have a lasting impact on their personal development and the community's future.

The Kentucky 4-H Issues Conference is a testament to the transformative power of youth development programs, and these two delegates are now better equipped to lead and create meaningful change.
