Stitching Hope

Author: Joni Phelps

Planning Unit: Livingston County CES

Major Program: Mental Health and Well-being - FCS

Plan of Work: Health and nutrition education, physical activity, aging, and chronic disease awareness/prevention.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In the heart of Livingston County, a small community group known as the Homemakers Pins & Needles embarked on a heartfelt mission to bring comfort and dignity to those in need. This group, comprised of individuals dedicated to the art of sewing and crafting, decided to use their skills to make a difference at the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center.

The group first discussed ways to give back to the community during a monthly meeting, which sparked the idea. The Merryman House, a refuge for survivors of domestic violence, came to mind as a perfect recipient for their talents. The group decided to create homemade makeup bags to offer a touch of comfort and normalcy to the residents of the center. With enthusiasm and dedication, the Pins & Needles Group gathered colorful fabrics and sewing supplies. Each member contributed their unique touch to the design of the makeup bags, ensuring that every stitch symbolized care and compassion.

Over weeks of sewing and assembling, the group's workshop buzzed with activity and laughter, as both veteran and novice sewers collaborated tirelessly. By the end of the project, the group had crafted over 45 makeup bags. This initiative not only fostered a sense of community within the group but also inspired those around them. The project illustrated the power of using one's skills for the greater good and showed that even a small group with a passion for sewing can create significant change. Local media celebrated the Pins & Needles Group's efforts, inspiring more community members to participate in future projects.

Stitch by stitch, the Livingston County Homemakers Pins & Needles Group has woven more than just fabric into the lives of many, demonstrating that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
