Planning Unit: Wolfe County CES

Major Program: Farm Management

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Wolfe County ANR Program partnered with Wolfe County Farm Bureau for the first Annual Farm Field Safety Day. The event was held in October at the Hazel Green Park. 76 people were in attendance. When people arrived to the park, the were able to tour the park and Animal Shelter as well as help themselves to a meal. After the meal, the program began with demonstrations. A local farmer had brought 2 heifers and a corral to demonstrate cattle handling safety. Along with KBN Area Coordinator they showed how to properly handle cattle in an open area and get them loaded in a trailer. Morehead State University Farm Manager went over PTO safety and showed participants the dangers of PTOs. Local business, D&S Outdoor, went over chainsaw safety and proper safety equipment. The last demonstration was food safety. Attendees learned about proper food handling/transportation for outdoor events. After the safety demonstrations were completed, tickets were drawn for door prizes that had a safety theme (SMV signs, safety lights, protective earphones; fire extinguishers; cattle sorting paddles; etc). Since the event, several participants have indicated how they have now implemented new/different safety measures on their farm and door prize winners have mentioned how they are using their prizes to be safer around the farm.

Other partners included: Wolfe County Sheriffs Department (grilled hotdogs); KY Beef Network; Morehead State University; Wolfe County SNAP-Ed; Reed Graham (local farmer);and D&S Outdoor Equipment.
