According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 63 million U. S. citizens volunteer at least once for an organization a year. Scott County Extension Master Gardeners make up a part of that statistic and take their commitment to volunteer for the county Cooperative Extension Horticulture Program seriously. During the 2017-2018 program year, Scott County Master Gardeners donated over 700 hours by speaking at field days, farmers market, garden clubs, elementary schools, conducting classes, writing news articles, and working in vegetable gardens, demonstrations gardens, planning and teaching workshops at the Scott County Master Gardener Expo, just to name a few. According to the Independent Sector, Kentucky’s value per hour for volunteering for 2017 is $21.17. That equals at least $14,119.00 donated to the Scott County Cooperative Extension Horticulture Program. By putting a monetary value on the hours donated aids in acknowledging the volunteer-donated time, talents and energy, as well as quantifying the vast value volunteers provide.
