While the child is excited to create the quilted duffel bag in Unit 2 or whether they are one of our first year members working on Unit 1's drawstring bag, they do not understand the real benefit of learning to sew and what is happening that they do not even realize.

“Sewing is a discipline that helps develop self-esteem, confidence, focus, patience, fine motor skills, problem solving, process thinking and visualization. Additionally, sewing                                         encourages creative ability.” (The Creative Art of Sewing; www. NorthJersey.com; September 13, 2012.)

We feel this quote couldn't be more true here in Wolfe County. We recently completed Unit 2 projects with our second year sewing students. The progress they have made since they cut out their first piece of fabric is unbelievable. Not only have they gain technical skills in sewing that will benefit them through out their whole lives, they have gain those skills mentioned above. The once, frightening machine that gave them difficulties, they confidently sit in front of and produce quality pieces. Working with more difficult fabrics now, they remain calm because of the patience that sewing has taught them. The straps in the drawstring bag took most of them multiple sessions to complete. By the time Unit 2 arrives, the straps come easy because they can visualize what the end product will be and they have the focus and patience to complete them.

At the completion of all Unit 1 and Unit 2 projects we hold an Annual Fashion Review. Not only is this a way to showcase the hard work completed by the child but also a way to build confidence and self esteem. Family and friends join us to encourage the children on their projects and celebrate them at the reception that follows. We have been pleased with the strides our young sewing students have been making and look forward to seeing how they progress in the future.
