The Drug epidemic and opioid use within the region is a huge threat to fostering productive and healthy citizens for the future. The Truth and Consequences event is one of the leading events Family and Consumer Sciences has to help combat this threat. This program is designed to address Freshmen in particular in becoming aware of the truth about the consequences of drug abuse. In 2017 for the third year, FCS has coordinated this event for Johnson Central and Paintsville Highschool Freshmen. 200 students attended the event in the fall of 2017. Forty five professional leaders participated. Students were able to increase their knowledge on specific topics related to consequences of abuse and the law, by up to 66%. Following the program, students were able to create extensive lists indicating problems occurring from drug abuse as well as being able to list local resources for those who may need assistance. these steps are small, but significant in the effort to reduce drug abuse by way of prevention and the creation of more informed citizens.
