The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Assistant of Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service collaborated with Head Start teachers and aides and taught the Literacy, Eating and Activity for Primary ages Nutrition Program to the youth classrooms for a period of eight one hour sessions.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Assistant observed the youth and listened to the lifestyle choices that most of the youth had made daily. Many of the youth watched excessive amounts of television as well as played video games and had not realized the importance of staying physically active.

 The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Assistant decided to incorporate intensive physical activity discussions, and the teacher encouraged and played music for the class to dance to, such as The Hokey Pokey, The Chicken Dance and silly dancing.  The Program Assistant taught monthly and the youth requested to dance every month and shared their experiences. They had chosen various physical activities at home and when they were with their friends on their free time. Several students played ball, walked their dog, and one individual was extremely excited to tell the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Assistant that their parents were able to sign them up for spring soccer.
