This year marks a significant accomplishment for a long term effort for Johnson County in Community and Economic Development. For many years the Extension Council and the Family Consumer Sciences Council has noted the need for job creation and increased economic opportunities for local citizens. FCS efforts in 2017-18 has resulted in the culmination of many years of work compiled into one wholistic plan, with the support of volunteers, the Route 23 Cultural Heritage Network, Paintsville Tourism, the City and the County uniting their support. Paintsville-Gateway to the Arts was launched in 2017 as a result of FCS working with Rt 23 Cultural Heritage Network. The project united historic sites, all relevant supporting agencies, artists, events and products under one umbrella of "Packaged Tours". 

Since the summer of 2017, the tourism director has attended five events marketing the packages, volunteers have produced over 600 hand made products. Of the 45 artisans that were trained in exclusive products, 10% have continued making products they have learned and begun selling them at local events as well as continuing to train others.

As a result of these efforts, one package tour was booked, and 25 bus tours have indicated they will be calling this fall to book in 2019. In the meanwhile, the artisans continue to grow in their abilities and in sharing their skills. The uniting of agencies working together to deliver programs and events is strengthening, as they unite their event planning and efforts even for local events.

The Route 23 Cultural Heritage Network has prioritized the education of others as to what we have in Eastern Kentucky and why it is significant. They also prioritized a hospitality training for front line workers. To date, three presentations were created by FCS, and three of these trainings have been presented to groups ranging from 30-75 in attendance. A presentation is now being developed by FCS for schools and local groups as well. It will be presented at the hospitality training too, which is also being developed by FCS. 

While it is just the beginning, a strong foundation is being laid for community and economic development utilizing history, the arts and tourism. Local talent continues to escalate, and community teamwork is growing. While this effort is still classified as Initial efforts- it is based on many years of hard work, with potential fruition on the horizon and modest economic impacts being realized.
