Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In 2017, it was reported that there were 1.1% Hispanics or Latinos living in Estill County, Kentucky. There are 55,199,107 Hispanic people in the United States and of the English-speaking Hispanics in the USA; an estimated 57.5% are bilingual. Being bilingual is something that many jobs are asking for, it allows you to communicate with a greater part of the population, and it is something that schools want their students to become. The Estill County students do not start to learn a different language until they get to high school, and that is not enough time to become familiar with a different language. Which is why the Estill County FCS collaborated with Estill County 4H to offer kids a Spanish club. This club met biweekly and each meeting had a different topic for them to learn. We first started with who the FCS agent, Thays Flores was and why she was leading the club. The FCS agent was born in Panama City, Panama. Spanish was her first language and she is fluent in both Spanish and English. The club focused a lot on Spanish grammar and rules but also on the Hispanic culture. The main point for this club was to broaden and the minds of these young kids and teach them that there is more out there then the country they currently live in. The club had an average of eight participants. Because of Spanish club, one hundred percent of the participants learned basic Spanish words, 95% of them learned to count in Spanish, 95% of them learned the Spanish alphabet. One hundred percent of the participants were exposed to the Hispanic culture and are able to greet in Spanish. Some extra comments made: “can we do this club again next year?” “can we learn to cook some Latino foods?”
