An estimated 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2018. Of the estimated 5.7 million Americans, 71,000 are Kentucky residents. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and it is the fifth leading cause of death for those ages 65 and older. With these statistics in mind the Estill County Family and Consumer Sciences agent collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Association to put together an “Alzheimer’s: Basics Program.” This program educated participants on the basics of Alzheimer’s, what the disease looks like, what lifestyle changes the participants can take such as healthy eating and physical activity. Nine participants responded to the post evaluation. Because of the program, nine learned something new about Alzheimer’s, nine are taking steps for a better and healthier lifestyle, nine are eating healthier foods, and seven are increasing their physical activity. One hundred percent of the participants increased knowledge of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
