Country Ham is a longstanding tradition deeply rooted in Kentucky’s history. This program provides youth with the opportunity to learn about livestock education while gaining hands-on experience curing two country hams.
In 2024, the Union County 4-H Country Ham Project had 10 youth participants. Through a partnership with Webster and Henderson Counties, the program reaches even more youth across Kentucky. It was reintroduced to Union County in 2021, thanks to the dedication and support of Rodman Meacham (of Meacham Hams), who has played a vital role in its success.
Union County achieved significant recognition at the Kentucky State Fair, with Julian Beaven earning the title of Senior Reserve Overall Champion and Finley Beaven named Junior Reserve Overall Champion. These accomplishments brought great pride to the county.
For 2025, participation in the program has grown to 13 youth. Each participant will showcase their ham at the County Fair and deliver a speech as part of the program. The Union County Country Ham Breakfast and Auction, a signature event sponsored by the Union County Kentucky Farm Bureau, is held on the last day of the fair.

These outcomes highlight the program's meaningful contributions to the development of its participants. Participants have shared how much they have learned through the program and strive each year to enhance their curing skills while also improving their speech delivery.
