Communication Essentials for a Good Impression

Author: Sarah Drysdale

Planning Unit: Ballard County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Leadership Development (KELD): Developing Core Leadership Skills

Plan of Work: Empowering Community & Extension Leaders

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Research shows that effective leadership is one factor necessary for success within today’s communities and organizations. Communication plays an important role in the leadership process.  As part of the Purchase Area Lifelong Learning Series Ballard County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent taught, “Communication Essentials for Good Impressions” to Purchase Area Homemakers and other community members. The program focused on non-verbal communication (body language and tone) and the roles speaking and active listening play in communication. After the program, participants reported that they intend to be active listeners in their daily activities. Through completed evaluations, participants reported the following, 70% recognized the importance of what people portray through non-verbal communication, 65% knew how to make a favorable first impression when speaking to a group, and 80% recognized the importance of being an effective listener. One participant stated, “I learned so much from this lesson and I cannot wait to practice these skills more and maybe even teach others.”  Another said, “This made me think more about how I interact with others regarding my facial expressions and body language."
