Plan of Work: Facilitating Youth and Adults in SET Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Science, Engineering, and Technology curriculum is becoming increasingly sought after in Kentucky.  Schools in the area are starting to focus lessons on these three subjects.  Unfortunately, some Hispanic youth are unable to benefit from the Science, Engineering, and Technology curriculum because they belong to migrant families that travel around for seasonal work and are not in one area for an extended period of time.  The Scott County Cooperative Extension Office decided to hold a Migrant Education Summer Camp for youth in Scott County.  The 4-H Agents, Family Consumer Science Agent, and Horticulture Agent collaborated with Kentucky Migrant Education to hold the 3 day camp at the Scott County Cooperative Extension Office.  Fifty Hispanic youth attended the camp.  There were 2 translators that helped during the camp, although they were mostly needed when working with the younger youth.  The camp had three rotations per day, each with a hands-on lesson about Horticulture, Health and Nutrition, and Science, Engineering, and Technology.  The 4-H Agents, along with the 4-H Program Assistant, taught the youth about flight, motion and force, design, and rockets.  The youth were able to: 1) assemble and launch rockets from an air compressor launch, 2) design, put together, and paint their own bird house, and 3) explore flight of birds and planes through the use of binoculars.  Many youth talked about their experiences at the camp and all they were able to learn.  One youth said he would like to grow up and be a rocket designer!  The translators from Kentucky Migrant Education felt the camp made a difference for the youth, and have made plans with Scott County Cooperative Extension to hold more Migrant Education Camps in the near future.
