Christmas Assistance Parenting Workshop

Author: Keller

Planning Unit: Hickman County CES

Major Program: Family Development General

Plan of Work: Improve the stability, resiliency and capability of individuals through life skill development.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Each year Extension, KAPS/FRYSC, and the Mission House in Hickman County partner to provide family focused skill development workshops covering nutrition (general and youth focused), financial literacy, and building and maintaining effective communication in family settings.  Through our community partners, Christmas assistance is provided as an incentive to attend the workshops each year.  Through these skill development workshops parents and caregivers are able to learn more about important topics to ensure they are able to provide a strong example for the children they care for.

Food as Health toolkit information (publications, recipes, Powerpoint) was used when developing this year's workshop focusing on financial literacy when discussing building a balanced diet while on a budget.  Partners included KAPS/FRYSC office of Hickman County, Mission House of Hickman County, and speakers from community banks, Clinton Bank and First Community Bank of the Heartland.

The same workshop was given four separate times on different days to accommodate the audience's schedules and allow maximum opportunities for everyone to attend.

A total of forty-four attendees with an average of 11 at each session.  95.5% noted an increased level of understanding of the nutrients they need more of, 90.9% noted an increased level of understanding of the nutrients they need less of, 93.2% express and increased understanding of financial literacy, 100% noted an increased understanding of planning/shopping & preparing/storing food and diet plans while maintaining a budget.  95.5% of attendees agreed this information was practical and educational.

Based on Sign In Sheet data: 64.2% white adults, 26.9% African American, and 9.0% identifying as two or more races.
