Major Program: Communications & Expressive Arts
Plan of Work: Cultivating community leadership, engagement and pride through educational and experiential learning.
Outcome: Initial Outcome
It was determined in the 2023 Christian County Community Needs Assessment that strengthening youth workforce readiness and life skill trainings was a priority to help grow the youth in the county. In partnership with the Christian County Public Schools Gifted and Talented, the Family Consumer Science, and 4-H Youth Development, we were able to provide this learning opportunity for 31 youth in grades 5th through 8th.
The program was a day long that consisted of communication skills, civil discourse and proper etiquette. We wanted the youth to learn different variations of communications like simple introductions, speeches, and debates. Then, we added in table setting and manners. The youth had to learn which utensil or plate should be used to prepare them for future dining with prospective employers or dates.
At the end of the day for the program, we found that:
100% of youth surveyed indicated they gained or strengthened their ability to express their thoughts or opinions
100% of youth surveyed indicated they did use information to communicate with others
100% of youth surveyed said they understand how their actions and opinions can impact others
100% of youth surveyed showed they did learn new skills to prepare or improve their life
100% of youth surveyed showed that they learned new personal skills as a result of participating in an Extension workforce development program or outreach.
With these findings, it proves to be a successful day of learning and gives hope that this is one step in helping create positive youth for the community.
