Planning Unit: Wolfe County CES

Major Program: Communications and Expressive Arts 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership, Citizenship, Heath & Life Skills Among Youth

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Having the ability to effectively communicate is something that is important for our youth today. The Wolfe County High School Volleyball Coach knows this to be important on and off the court. He wants his kids to be employable after their volleyball careers are over which is why he sought the help of the Wolfe County 4-H program to develop those skills that will take them farther than the court.

For our second year I have worked with the entire volleyball team (25 youth). The skills we work to improve are:

*Resume (writing, editing, updating and knowing what to include)

*Cover Letter (writing, editing and knowing what to include)

*Interview Skills (appropriate dress, how to conduct yourself, proper handshake)

Each child completed a cover letter, resume, mock interview, and work motivation scale. The cover letter, resume and work motivation scale were completed in the county prior to conducting the mock interview. All the Mock Interviews were held on the University of Kentucky's campus. By holding these on UK campus, we are able to work with state 4-H specialist (Chuck Stamper and Kim Leger Adams) and were able to expose all these students to the possibility of them attending UK in the future for their studies.

Do to using the curriculum to enhance these skills, the students reported numerous successes in the following areas:

*100% of the students felt like they had increased their ability to effectively communicate with future interviewers.

*100% of the students felt more comfortable with writing a cover letter and resume

*100% of students felt more prepared for future interviews with possible college recruiters and employers.

*96% of students reported that they now understand the importance of being prepared for their future endeavors by having a cover letter, resume and by having mock interview practice.

*100% of the students completed a resume using the guildelines given

*100% of the students completed a cover letter using the guidelines given.

*100% of the students spent an entire day on a college campus being exposed to possible career opportunities.

*100% of students completed a work motivation scale to determine what motivates them to complete tasks.
