Monroe County Tabletop Farmers continues to grow young leaders

Author: Christina Hogue

Planning Unit: Monroe County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: LIfe Skills Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Monroe County Tabeltop Farmers 4-H Club was established in November 2022.  This club has grown in number and is producing some of this area’s most effective young leaders.  Members from this club have been actively involved in numerous community service projects, 4-H projects, and also fund raising events for the club.  The club worked together to sell over 500 steak sandwiches to raise money to help them expand the club.  Although this raised a great amount of money, the club felt that they wanted to bring work the local tourism commission to host the 2nd Annual Toy Show at the Monroe County Extension Office on October 18-19, 2024.

Club members and leaders made a presentation to the local tourism commission to receive funding to promote the show.  To receive funds, members utilized communication skills to promote the show on local radio, as well as regional radio.  Members worked to create ads for billboards and print.  As a 2 day show one of the goals was to boost the local economy.   Knowledge of small businesses and the local economy was presented to club members as they worked to make the show a success.

Not only did members promote the show, they worked to assist the day of the show.  In evaluations given to each vendor, one of the most positive aspects of this show was the 4-H’ers positive attitudes and willingness to help vendors with their needs throughout the show.

Officers of the Tabletop Farmers club worked with the agent to create, distribute, collect, and analyze the evaluations.  This helped the youth understand the needs of the vendors as well as improve their communication skills.  With the knowledge they had gained as they prepared to promote the show, they also displayed an understanding of the local economy and put that knowledge to use as they assisted in preparing the evaluation.

Although Monroe County Tabletop Farmers 4-H Club is a relatively new club, it is producing some of the most effective young leaders in the county.
