Success StoryThe PENco Hiking Club – Stepping Forward Together

The PENco Hiking Club – Stepping Forward Together

Author: Lindie Huffman

Planning Unit: Pendleton County CES

Major Program: Mental Health and Well-being - ANR

Plan of Work: Implementing environmental stewardship at home, on the farm and in the community through STEaM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture Sustainability, & Mathematics) and natural resource education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The PENco Hiking Club has quickly become a cornerstone of community engagement, fostering wellness, friendship, and environmental stewardship. What began as a simple initiative to encourage locals to explore nearby trails has grown into a dynamic, collaborative program that brings together residents from across Pendleton County. Through the joint efforts of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), and 4-H, the club has cultivated a space where individuals of all ages come together to embrace the great outdoors, learn about local natural resources, and connect with one another.

Since its inception in 2022, the PENco Hiking Club has welcomed over 45 participants, with an average of 22 hikers per trip. Each outing typically spans 12 hours, as hikers explore new trails, enjoy local food, and connect with fellow participants. While the club has collectively hiked over 22 miles so far, the true value of the program lies not in the miles covered, but in the friendships formed and the mental health benefits gained along the way.

Hiking has long been known for its positive impact on mental health, offering participants a chance to escape daily stress, engage in physical activity, and appreciate the healing power of nature. The PENco Hiking Club has provided just that—a space where individuals can unwind, improve their fitness, and enjoy the tranquility of Kentucky’s natural landscapes. Beyond the physical health benefits, the club encourages participants to take time for themselves, offering a much-needed respite from the pressures of everyday life.

The club also serves as a powerful tool for natural resource education. Each trip highlights the beauty of Kentucky’s parks and preserves, teaching participants about conservation, sustainability, and the importance of protecting these precious resources. From the scenic trails of Natural Bridge State Park to the caves of Mammoth Cave National Park, hikers learn firsthand about the ecosystems that surround them and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

In addition to personal and environmental benefits, the PENco Hiking Club also supports local tourism. The group often enjoys meals at local establishments, promoting community engagement and providing a boost to local businesses. This blend of fitness, education, and local pride makes the program a unique and valuable part of the community.

In just a short time, the PENco Hiking Club has built a foundation of strong community ties. It’s a group that values connection, adventure, and environmental stewardship. As we continue to grow, we look forward to many more hikes, more friendships, and more opportunities to explore the natural world together. Here’s to the journey ahead—and the miles we’ll cover together!
