Building Leaders

Author: Cathy Toole

Planning Unit: Henry County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Providing leadership opportunities is a large part of the developmental youth portion of the 4-H program. This past year the Henry County youth have benefited from opportunities to explore many offerings that have opened their eyes to possibilities for future success.

There are 5 Henry County youth serving on state teen council and leadership boards.  We have a Natural Resource Ambassador, Shooting Sports Ambassador, Fashion Leadership Ambassador, a State Teen Council Representative as well as the Kentucky State President all serving in the county.

Teens have attended the National 4-H Congress, Southern Teen Regional Leadership Conference, State Teen Conference, and Area Teen Council.

Middle school aged youth attend Teen Summit in which they get their first taste of a statewide event and navigate conversations and workshops with youth from other counties that they met for the first time.

There are 5 participants in the Natural Resources and Environmental Academy that have attended 5 events across the state learning hands on about our environment and making friends from across the state.

In the competition area we have had one teen reach the top 4 in the Kentucky State Judging Team and travelled to at least six states and competing in 4. She placed in each competition. We had one of the shooting sports members attend the National 4-H Shooting competition in Nebraska this past summer. She placed the highest from the state of Kentucky in black powder.

Fifteen teens served as teen leaders during 4-H camp, where they became big brothers and sisters to over 120 youth for a week.  They stepped up and helped teach classes as well as mentoring the youth in their cabins.

Leaders are not born they are made, as the old saying goes.  For over 100 years 4-H has been growing leaders in Henry County.
