Sweet Success: Maple Syrup Program Inspires Whitley County Residents

The Whitley County Horticulture Program, led by Agent Ben Prewitt, recently hosted a well-received educational event at the Whitley County Extension Office in Goldbug, Kentucky. Focused on maple syrup production, the program attracted 57 eager participants and provided an in-depth look at this rewarding agricultural practice.

Special guest speaker Shad Baker, Letcher County’s Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent, joined Prewitt to deliver a comprehensive presentation. The program covered key topics such as identifying and tapping sugar maple trees, sap collection methods, boiling techniques, and marketing strategies to turn maple syrup into a profitable venture.

Participants gained practical knowledge on recognizing the potential of sugar maples in southeastern Kentucky and learned how to integrate syrup production into their farming operations. Both Prewitt and Baker emphasized the environmental and cultural benefits of this sustainable practice.

The program received unanimous praise, with all participants stating they left with new knowledge and skills. One attendee remarked, “I didn’t realize how much potential there was in maple syrup production. This program gave me the tools and confidence to try it myself.”

Agent Ben Prewitt plans to offer follow-up workshops, including hands-on demonstrations, to help participants take the next steps in their syrup production journey.

The Whitley County Horticulture Program’s maple syrup workshop exemplifies the power of education and collaboration in creating new opportunities. By empowering residents, the program has made a lasting impact, proving that tapping into local resources is a sweet success for the community.
