Garden Success

Author: Chelsea Sapp

Planning Unit: Marion County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Core Program Area: Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Early spring I assisted a new client and their family with planning their first garden. They were new to gardening so I provided them many helpful resources to aid in their knowledge. We took soil tests and determined the next steps for the garden. This helped with picking the location of the garden. Then, my client and I put together a map of where vegetables should be planted and created a guide for planting dates and expected harvest. They planted carrots, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, pumpkins and beets.

As a result of garden planning, my clients had a successful garden and were able to use Extension publications to help them with canning. They are already working with me to establish another garden and make it bigger this growing season. With their fresh produce, they can save money at the grocery store, feed their family and learn new skills that come with gardening.

Garden planning and soil tests helped this family of four. 2 white males and 2 white females.
