Planning Unit: Magoffin County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Developing Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Members of the community are looking for new ways to create extra income during the holiday season, and learn new skills with a class welcome to all ages.

The Educational Program focused on a live wreath-making class aimed at teaching participants of all ages how to create seasonal wreaths using greenery collected from their own properties. The class emphasized not only the technique of wreath-making, but also how to keep the cut greenery alive throughout the season, providing lasting beauty and encouraging repeat sales for potential customers. Participants learned how to gather various natural materials from their surroundings, ensuring sustainable use of their resources. They were guided in crafting live wreaths that could serve as both decorative pieces for personal use and potential items to sell within their community. The program also offered insights into the use of tools and materials available at the office, such as the wreath-making table, to facilitate the creation process. Overall, the workshop aimed to promote creativity, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, while helping individuals incorporate natural holiday and seasonal decor into their homes or small businesses.

Twenty members of the community of all ages, 3 male and 17 female participated in the class.

The live wreath-making class had a positive impact on participants by fostering creativity, sustainability, and entrepreneurial skills. Attendees not only gained hands-on experience in creating live greenery wreaths but also learned how to sustainably harvest natural materials from their own properties, ensuring that the greenery remained fresh and vibrant throughout the winter season. The hands-on nature of the class empowered participants to take pride in creating their own decor while connecting with others in their community. The resources provided, such as the wreath-making table and other materials, made the process accessible and enjoyable for individuals of all skill levels.
