Describe the Issue or Situation. In 2023, there were 1,152 people in Kentucky diagnosed with breast cancer. Average annual count of 7 were in Lewis County, with 33.3% of cases with Late Stage diagnoses.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable). Lewis County FCS partnered with Primary Plus and Lewis County Health Department to have a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon. A female employee of Lewis County Health Department....a breast cancer survivor, was our guest speaker. It was very emotional for her as well as the audience. We served a Baked Potato Bar with brownies and (SNAP) Pumpkin Muffins (& passed out recipe cards). We had numerous door prizes for the attendees. The mobile mammography bus was discussed as well as other areas where mammograms could be received (LC Health Dept, Primary Plus, Southern Ohio Medical Center (Lewis County Office) and funded, if necessary. 3 ladies in our audience were breast cancer survivors! Part of the program included a "mini" lesson of how exercise can benefit everyone, so we did some exercises close to our chairs.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience. 45 (44 females/1 male) participants were present and ages ranged from 28-78.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
The audience felt that sometimes when it comes to personal health and taking care of YOU, they were lacking....telling us this was a great, gentle reminder to have a mammogram, encourage others to have them and live as healthy life as possible.
