Agriculture Leadership In Adair County

Author: Nick Roy

Planning Unit: Adair County CES

Major Program: Community Leadership Development

Plan of Work: Leadership and Community Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service plays a pivotal role in fostering leadership development within the agricultural community, impacting individuals and organizations alike. One example is the Adair County Cattlemen's Association, which boasts a membership of 338 cattle producers. Through workshops, seminars, and networking events organized by the Extension Service, members have honed their leadership skills, resulting in a stronger, more cohesive community. These efforts have not only enhanced individual capabilities but have also elevated the collective voice of the Association in advocating for agricultural interests.

The Extension Service’s commitment to education extends beyond adult leadership, as seen in the contributions of the Adair County Extension Master Gardeners. These 10 volunteers, trained by the Extension Service, have volunteered 360 hours in teaching local citizens and youth about sustainable gardening practices. Their outreach efforts have cultivated a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders, fostering a deeper appreciation for horticulture and its impact on the community.

The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service also works closely with the Adair County Agriculture Development Council’s and their investment of $264,490 in on-farm improvements and the establishment of a new greenhouse for the local FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter. These financial investments in agriculture improve the profitability of local farms and aid in providing education to future farmers.

Together, these initiatives highlight the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service’s vital role in nurturing leadership within the agricultural sector, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for the community.
