Author: Garrard Coffey

Planning Unit: Rockcastle County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Improve Livestock Production and Management Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The recent Fall Field Day event, a collaboration between Rockcastle Extension, Conservation, Farm Bureau and USDA office,  proved to be a resounding success, leaving a significant impact on participants and advancing sustainable practices in beef cattle management and soil conservation. With 78 attendees, the event facilitated the exchange of knowledge and practical skills essential for enhancing agricultural sustainability.

One notable achievement of the day was the Beef Quality Assurance Certification (BQCA) provided to 19 participants. This certification empowers producers with the latest best practices in cattle management, ensuring high-quality beef production and animal welfare standards. The BQCA certification reflects participants' commitment to adopting robust health, nutrition, and management practices that align with industry standards.

Moreover, the event catalyzed meaningful change among the attendees. An impressive 18 participants reported implementing new practices learned during the field day. This swift adoption of new techniques underscores the effectiveness of hands-on demonstrations and expert-led workshops featured during the event. Participants gained valuable insights into innovative soil conservation methods, enhancing nutrient management and erosion control efforts on their farms.

Field Day's emphasis on integrating beef cattle operations with sustainable soil conservation practices resonates with modern agricultural priorities. By providing a platform for learning and collaboration, the event fostered a community of proactive, informed producers. As participants continue to implement these new strategies, the broader agricultural community stands to benefit from improved environmental stewardship and increased productivity.
