Health Rocks

To promote healthy choices and habits among 4th graders in Hart County, the Family Consumer Science agent along with the Agriculture agent other community partners presented a "Health Rocks" day which provided educational sessions to all 4th grade students in the county. The community partners included Hart County Schools 4th grade teachers, Hart County Search and Rescue, Hart County Family Resource Centers, Hart County Schools Technology Coordinator, Hart County Sheriff's Department, Life Skills Counseling Center and Local Volunteer Fire Departments. 212 Fourth grade students were transported to a local venue and each participated in the project. 

The collaboration among all the agencies resulted in an entire day of individual sessions provided by each organization. The Family Consumer Science Agent presented on nutritional eating. The Agriculture agent provided a session on farm safety. The Hart County Search and Rescue presented water safety information. The Hart County Family Resource Centers discussed the effects of vaping and smoking. The Hart County Schools Technology Coordinator talked with students about internet dangers and staying safe while utilizing apps and social media. The Hart County Sheriff's Department presented a program on the effects of alcohol. Life Skills Counseling Center discussed stress management. One of our local Volunteer Fire Departments discussed fire safety. At the end of the sessions, the students were led by one of the FRYSC directors in a healthy movement activity (line dancing). 

The students were given a presentation by the Family Consumer Science agent on how to eat healthy utilizing Myplate.gov resources. Each student was given a healthy snack of fruit and yogurt parfait.  98% of the students stated they liked the healthy snack and some stated they would ask their parents to purchase items to make it at home. 

The goal of the program was to provide students with knowledge to help them stay safe and healthy in various settings and situations. The day was very successful as it provided knowledge and fun to the students.
