In the fall of 2024, Harrison County 4-H was able to provide an extended day camp for all 4^th and 5^th graders in public and private schools at no cost to the schools. Across 4 different days, North Central 4-H Camp welcomed 450 youth and 42 adults for seven hours of camp experience and outdoor learning. Fourth grade classrooms were able to attend the venue’s environmental education program and participated in nature hiking, pond study, poo did it class, camouflage, and backyard games.  Fifth grade classrooms attended colonial camp and participated in KY history, forest pharmacy, colonial economics, wilderness road, and backyard games. All classes also received a county 4-H promotion and 4-H camp preview with “Sally Down the Alley” prior to departure.

During the day camps, 4-H teen leaders assisted in both 4-H and camp promotions, dining room meal duties, and addressing any teacher or student need while on site. One teen leader led the backyard games class each day.

After the camps, one mother of a 5^th grader who attended, reported that her child developed a love for history in school because of colonial camp and its real life immersion teaching style.

Sending these students to camp was made possible by support from the Extension District Board, and donations from: Arch Care LLC, Harrison County Soil Conservation, and Harrison County Farm Bureau.
