Success StoryFleming County's Laugh and Learn Program

Fleming County's Laugh and Learn Program

Author: Kaitlyn Fryman

Planning Unit: Fleming County CES

Major Program: Child Development General

Plan of Work: Nutrition/Health/Wellness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Issue or Situation: Many young children in Fleming County lack opportunities to engage in structured, hands-on activities that promote the development of fine and gross motor skills. Additionally, high school students in child development classes often seek meaningful, real-world experiences to apply their learning and enhance their understanding of working with children.

Outreach or Educational Program Response: In response to this need, the Fleming County Extension Service partnered with Fleming County High School’s Child Development class, led by Mrs. Earlywine, to create the Laugh and Learn Playdate Program. This monthly program provides families with young children a welcoming space to participate in fun, educational activities that encourage skill development through play. The program also gives high school students the opportunity to plan and lead interactive stations, promoting leadership and hands-on learning.

The November Laugh and Learn Playdate featured a variety of engaging activities, including story time, track painting, singing and dancing to the song "Wheels on the Bus," creating healthy "traffic light" snacks, and playing Red Light, Green Light down Alphabet Road. Additionally, a school bus safety lesson was coordinated by Candy Dales (FRYSC) to teach children important safety practices.

Number and Description of Participants/Target Audience: The November session had a total of 9 children participating alongside 9 parents or guardians, who actively engaged in the activities with their children. Additionally, 10 high school students from Mrs. Earlywine’s class participated in leading the stations, with their teacher providing guidance throughout the session.

Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact: The Laugh and Learn Program has created positive outcomes for both children and high school students involved. According to feedback from parents, children demonstrated increased engagement and excitement in trying new activities and practicing motor skills at home. High school students reported increased confidence in their ability to interact with young children and lead educational activities. Teachers observed that students improved their communication and leadership skills as a result of their involvement in the program.

Parents expressed gratitude for having a structured, supportive environment to play and learn with their children. Additionally, students noted that the experience helped them better understand child development concepts covered in class. The Laugh and Learn Program has fostered stronger community connections by providing a space for families to engage in meaningful learning experiences while empowering high school students to serve as positive role models.
