Describe the Issue or Situation
In an era where consumer confidence in agricultural products hinges on transparency and best practices, training future agricultural professionals in Beef Quality and Care Assurance (BQCA) is critical. BQCA certification equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve the quality, safety, and marketability of beef while fostering responsible cattle handling and care. For high school agriculture students, obtaining this certification also enhances career readiness by meeting industry standards for professionalism and knowledge in livestock management.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable)
To address this need, Owen County Agriculture Agent Kendal Bowman partnered with the local high school agriculture program to offer the Beef Quality and Care Assurance (BQCA) training. This initiative combined national BQA standards with Kentucky’s enhanced BQCA model, focusing on cattle handling, feed management, biosecurity, and animal welfare. Delivered as an interactive and engaging classroom session, the program provided students with hands-on knowledge of best management practices.
Through collaboration with the high school agriculture teacher and the Kentucky Beef Network, Kendal ensured the training was accessible and aligned with both educational and industry standards. The training not only prepared students for their future careers but also contributed to their career readiness certification.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience
The program successfully trained and certified 21 high school agriculture animal science students, representing the next generation of livestock producers and agricultural professionals. These students are active participants in the school’s agriculture program and are possibly pursuing pathways that align with the livestock and farming industries. The training provided them with industry-recognized credentials, enhancing their career prospects and competitiveness in the workforce.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact
All 21 students who participated in the training passed the certification exam, earning their BQCA credentials. This accomplishment not only reinforces the importance of food safety and animal welfare but also positions these students as leaders in the agricultural industry. The certification also counts toward their Career Readiness Industry Certification, a significant achievement that boosts their career potential and college or job market readiness.
Students expressed increased confidence in their knowledge of cattle management and handling practices, and many indicated an interest in applying these skills on family farms or pursuing further education in agriculture. By fostering a strong foundation in beef quality assurance, this program strengthens the community’s agricultural future, supports the local economy, and aligns with the UK Extension Service mission to promote sustainable and responsible farming practices.
