Major Program: Natural Resources
Plan of Work: Sustaining Our Natural Resources
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Natural resources play a vital role in everyday life and meeting people’s needs. Clay County has over 300,000 acres of land with approximately 256,000 acres of forest land. Many youth across the county lack knowledge and appreciation of the surrounding environment. In order to increase awareness, the 4-H Youth Development Agent and ANR Agent collaborated and hosted Environmental Field Day at Big Double Creek Park in Redbird.
Clay County Cooperative Extension ANR, 4-H, FCS Agents and NEP Assistant partnered with Red Bird Ranger District, Soil Conservation District, KY Department of Fish & Wildlife, KY Division of Waste Management, KY Furbearers, KY Waterway Alliance, elementary teachers and volunteers. There were over 240 (4th-6th) grade students, and 26 volunteers who participated at this event.
Students were divided into groups and had the opportunity to visit each station, which consisted of water quality, soils, wildlife, pollinators, growing herbs, tree identification and much more. The volunteers had multiple hands-on activities to help engage students at each station. Students were given pre and post evaluations. After completion of the program, students indicated an increase of knowledge in how to better protect the environment, distinguish the difference between reducing, reusing and recycling products, and an increased interest of careers in natural resources and environmental sciences. Over 97% of students reported that they felt more knowledgeable about their environment.
The attendance rate increased from previous year, all agents and assistant were involved for the first time, and new partners joined the Environmental Field Day Event for the first time. Overall, this event was a positive experience for everyone who attended.
