According to the USDA of Agriculture, one mouthful in three of the foods you eat directly or indirectly depends on pollination by honey bees.  Honey bee populations have been declining in Kentucky over the past ten or more years.  Education is key to helping protect honey bees as well as teaching beekeepers how to care for their hives.

In 2017 the Greenup County Beekeepers Association was formed by a hand full of members.  The main focus of the Association is to educate local beekeepers and mentor beginning beekeepers.   At each meeting the beekeepers have an education portion of the meeting.   They also have hosted the first annual Bee School.  The bee school was tailored for beginner beekeepers and offered hands on opportunities.

The association has grown tremendously having more than forty members.  Their outreach has been amazing too.  There are bee hives with educational mentors at two local schools. The Greenup County Extension Office also has two educational hives on the property.
