Describe the Issue or Situation.
The situation involves youth participants in a county fair, where they have spent the year caring for and training their 4-H animal projects. The county fair is a significant event for these young individuals, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their hard work, skills, and knowledge gained throughout the year. It is a time for them to demonstrate their commitment to animal care, agriculture, and personal growth.
At the fair, the youth compete for various awards, with the ultimate goal of earning the prestigious title of Grand Champion. This competition not only highlights the animals' quality and the youth's ability to care for them, but also serves as a celebration of their dedication, responsibility, and teamwork. The event is a culmination of months of learning, growth, and effort, making it a pivotal experience for the participants as they strive to achieve recognition for their hard work.
Describe the Outreach or Educational Program Response (and Partners, if applicable).
The outreach and educational program response involves a collaborative effort between the local Cooperative Extension 4-H program and key partners, including the Henderson County Fair Board and Livestock Committee and the local FFA Chapter. Together, they organize and host a variety of livestock shows each night during the county fair. This partnership ensures that the event is well-supported and structured, providing a platform for youth to engage in hands-on learning and competition.
Through this program, youth from both Henderson County and neighboring counties have the opportunity to participate in showmanship and general livestock classes. Through showmanship they test their knowledge of animal care, handling, and presentation, as well as their ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate their skills to judges and spectators.
The shows offer valuable learning experiences, where participants can receive feedback on their performance, improve their skills, and gain recognition for their hard work and dedication. The program also fosters a sense of community, as youth collaborate, share knowledge, and support one another throughout the fair. Ultimately, this outreach initiative not only serves as a platform for showcasing animal projects but also promotes education in agriculture, livestock management, and leadership development.
Provide the Number and Description(s) of Participants/Target Audience.
The program involved 63 youth participants from Henderson County, who showcased their skills through seven different livestock shows during the county fair. These participants were primarily members of two key youth organizations: the Herdsmen Club (a 4-H club) and the local FFA chapter.
The youth came from diverse backgrounds, but all shared a passion for animal care and agricultural education. The 4-H members and FFA students actively participated in various livestock classes, including showmanship and classic animal categories, competing to demonstrate their animal handling expertise, knowledge, and commitment. This mix of participants provided an enriching environment for learning and skill development, while also fostering collaboration and camaraderie between the two youth organizations.
Through their involvement, the youth not only gained valuable experience but also had the chance to build confidence, improve leadership abilities, and deepen their understanding of agriculture and livestock management.
Provide a Statement of Outcomes or Program Impact. Please note that the outcomes statement must use evaluation data to describe the change(s) that occurred in individuals, groups, families, businesses, or in the community because of the program/outreach.
The program had a significant impact on the 63 youth participants, both financially and in terms of their future growth and opportunities. Through their involvement in the livestock shows, these youth were able to participate in the County Scholarship Auction, where a total of over $92,000 was awarded. This funding will directly support their future 4-H and FFA projects, enabling them to continue developing their agricultural skills and animal care knowledge in the coming year.
The auction not only provided financial support but also reinforced the importance of hard work, dedication, and community involvement. The significant amount raised highlights the local community’s commitment to supporting youth development and agricultural education. For the participants, this financial backing will help cover the costs of animal care, equipment, and other project expenses, ensuring they can continue their work with confidence.
Overall, the program’s outcomes demonstrate positive changes in the youth's ability to pursue their agricultural interests, and the funds raised will enable them to build on the skills they have developed, fostering long-term personal growth, educational success, and community engagement.
