Kentucky 4-H Poultry Program BBQ Chicken Camp

This summer, Kentucky 4-H Poultry Program partnered with 4-H programs from Caldwell,  Crittenden, Livingston and Lyon  counties to host a highly successful BBQ Chicken Camp. Aimed at empowering youth with essential cooking skills, the camp attracted 16 young participants who gained hands-on experience in grilling and food safety.

According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior, developing cooking skills early in life is a strong predictor of better nutrition-related outcomes even 10 years later. The BBQ Chicken Camp was designed with this in mind, providing a practical, engaging opportunity for youth to build these critical life skills.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Jacqueline Jacob, participants learned the fundamentals of grill safety and proper grilling techniques. Dr. Jacob gave step-by-step instructions on how to set up a grill, light charcoal, and manage a fire. Each participant was responsible for their own grill, allowing them to practice skills that they can carry into adulthood.

In addition to grilling techniques, the camp also focused on food safety. Dr. Jacob taught proper chicken handling techniques and emphasized the importance of hand washing to prevent contamination. Each youth participant grilled chicken thighs and prepared ground turkey burgers, gaining confidence in working with different proteins.

The BBQ Chicken Camp was a collaborative effort, made possible through the cooperation of multiple 4-H programs. The partnership between Caldwell, Crittenden, Livingston and Lyon counties showcased the strength of community in supporting youth development.

By the end of the camp, the young participants had not only prepared a delicious meal but also acquired lifelong skills that contribute to healthier lifestyles. Events like these highlight the vital role that 4-H programs play in fostering personal growth and setting youth up for long-term success.
